Course Objective

FOUNDATION ENGLISH: This course is especially designed as a course for those whose English is insufficient either for further study or work purposes in the UK. The focus is mainly on regular skills development, which includes grammar, sentence structure, syntax, pronunciation, fluency in reading and writing (essay writing and composition).

Course Structure
The year is split into three semesters:
  • Autumn Term: Basic Language Development
  • Winter Term: Intermediate Language Development
  • Summer Term: Revision and Examinations
Assessment
There are two exam options, which will be dictated by the development of the students and these are as follows:

1. IELTS

  • With this exam all students receive a grade depending on their level.
  • UK universities accept Grade 6 (CEF level C1).
  • Students can sit this exam every month.

2.Cambridge University KET (Key English Test) ESOL exams:

  • This exam takes students from an introductory level up to the ability to being able to manage the four language skills and use them in a wide range of contexts.
  • It provides evidence of practical skills, and indicates sufficient ability to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs and in many industries such as tourism where contact with English speakers is required.
  • The exam has three parts Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking.
  • All three parts of the exam must be passed in order to gain a successful grade - only then will a certificate be issued.
  • The KET exam is related to a series of ‘Can Do’ statements, which in turn are equal to a CEF level. KET = A2.

Weekly Class Schedule

All students will take a preliminary test, which will establish their language level, and give an indication of where the course has to concentrate. The teaching staff will divide the students into classes of 8-10, depending on ability.

Extracurricular Benefits

The class will take advantage of being so close to central London, and the college will arrange a series of visits to cultural and historical sites as part of the learning process.

Students will be members of ISC, International Students Club where students from all over the world meet, talk, arrange cultural events, visits and sporting events.

Teaching Staff

The teaching staff are all appropriately qualified and have many years experience of teaching English and working with foreign students.
